Addressing concerns about the transparency of the 2023 system, the LEC has decided to allocate the same amount of points to teams finishing splits in fifth and sixth place, as well as seventh and eighth place.

This adjustment seeks to level the playing field, ensuring that teams with similar regular-season performances are rewarded equally, thus enhancing fairness and clarity.

Maximillian Schmidt, director of League of Legends esports in EMEA, stressed the need for a more transparent system, stating that the changes for 2024 aim to eliminate uncertainties and emphasize playoff performance over regular-season splits.

In addition to the Championship Points adjustment, the LEC is changing how teams qualify for the LEC Season Finals.

In 2024, the second and third-placed teams from the summer split will secure spots in the season finals, irrespective of their championship points or past results.

Tiebreakers will be determined by the teams’ head-to-head records from the regular season, minimizing the impact of tiebreakers on the competitive landscape.

The LEC is also adjusting the qualification process for international tournaments, with changes for MSI and Worlds.

The MSI qualification system remains mostly unchanged, with Winter and Spring Split winners earning the right to represent the EMEA region.

For Worlds, the Summer Split Champion secures an automatic invitation to the event, regardless of their seeding.

Moreover, the LEC is implementing format and schedule adjustments for the 2024 season.

The group and playoff stages will be merged into a single bracket, aiming to enhance the understanding of the LEC format.

The league is maintaining the same number of best-of-three and best-of-five series to uphold competitive integrity.

Artem Bykov, the LEC commissioner, emphasized the league’s commitment to listening to fan feedback, citing the need for improvement in understanding the LEC format.

The schedule adjustments include extended breaks between Winter and Spring Splits, as well as Spring Split and the Mid-Season Invitational, providing teams more time to rest.

Conversely, the break between the Summer Split and the LEC Season Finals will be reduced to address concerns about lengthy player breaks.

These decisions, coupled with other upcoming changes, reflect the LEC’s dedication to evolving and adapting its format based on fan feedback, promising an unmissable show for EMEA League fans in the upcoming season.

The League of Legends roster includes the two former members of the team, German and Turkish top laner Sergen “BrokenBlade” ?elik, and 23-year old Danish mid laner Rasmus “Caps” Borregaard Winther. Yike will assume the jungler role for the team. The Swedish national has represented other teams like Hybrid Esports, Bulldog Esports, Team Oplon, Morning Stars, and recently LDLC OL. While representing the European team LDLC OL, he has shone in tournaments such as the LFL 2022 Summer, where they came in first place, and the EM 2022 Summer Main Event, which had them in third-fourth place.

Playing the role of support will be Slovenian-born Mikyx, who has represented a handful of top LEC teams such as Fnatic, Splyce, Misfits Gaming, and most recently Excel. He started his professional gaming career in 2016 after serving as a stand-in for Fnatic, for which he received an offer from Splyce afterwards. The support player reached a significant milestone in his League of Legends career when he garnered a total of 1000 kills in the LEC on July 30, 2021. Mikyx also represented Excel at the recent 2022 LEC Summer Playoffs, where the team came out in sixth place.

The League of Legends super star Hans sama will be assuming the bot lane position for the G2 Esports. Since starting his career in 2014 with The Gentle Team, the bot lane player has represented Milenium, Misfits Gaming, Rogue, and most recently Team Liquid. The French player is known to have switched roles throughout his career, as he has functioned as a jungler and top laner at some points in his career. Hans sama was also the eighth player to reach 1,000 kills in the LEC, just after Rekkles, Jankos, Perkz, and a host of other four players. He also competed in the 2022 LCS Championship, where he represented Team Liquid and earned a fourth-place finish.

Caps started his League of Legends career in 2015 with Enigma Esports. Subsequently, he moved on to represent other esports outfits such as the Nerv, Fnatic, Dark Passage, E-Corp Gaming, and mousesports. The mid laner reached 1500 kills recently in the LEC on April 3, 2022, and is also the third player to reach 1500 kills in the LEC after Rekkles and Jankos.

Caps has a handful of awards under his sleeves, including MSI 2019 MVP, LEC MVP At the 2019 Spring 2019 and 2020 Summer. He was also named LEC Finals MVP in 2020 Summer and 2022 Spring and EU LCS MVP in 2018 Summer.

Brokenblade, who is the third player to win a title in both the LEC and LCS, has played for esports outfits such as the Victorious Ace, Royal Bandits TSM, Royal Youth, and a list of others. He has also been a member of G2 Esports since December 2021 and represented the team at the 2022 Worlds, where they made a quite unimpressive run by coming out in 11th-14th place.

According to the event organizers, the LEC is scheduled to commence on January 21, 2023, with the Winter Split as its start event.

Owing to the expansion, the league will undergo a change of name and will now be known as the League of Legends EMEA Championship, retaining the abbreviation LEC. The change will take effect in the 2023 season and will feature an extra split added to the usual two-split system.

The three splits format to be featured in the LEC going forward will be the “Winter Split,“ “Spring Split,” and the “Summer Split.” Each of the splits will feature 10 teams competing against themselves in a best-of-one format. Eight of the ten teams will advance to the best-of-three double elimination group stage, and thereafter, the best four teams will qualify for the best-of-five playoffs.

Each winner of the splits will receive a direct qualification to the LEC Season Finals. The end-of-season event will see the best six teams from the EMEA region across the season compete for the championship title.

The winner of the Spring Split will also represent the region in the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational (MSI). The Finals of the LEC Season will offer direct qualification to the League of Legends World Championship.

The previous LEC franchise selection of ten partnered teams, which includes Team Heretics due to their purchase of the slot previously owned by the Misfits, and KOI, which saw the emergence of Rogue, remains the same. As previously done, the circuits will consist of the rebranded Amazon EMEA Masters, which was previously known as the Amazon EU Masters, alongside 13 EMEA Regional Leagues (ERL) looking to qualify for it.

The additional ERLs will include the Turkish Championship League (TCL) and the Arabian League (AL), formerly known as the Intel Arabian Cup. Due to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the League of Legends Continental League (LCL) continues to remain suspended but could be added to the LEC sometime in the future. However, players from the region are allowed the same recidency status as their peers in the EMEA region.League

On Riot Games’ official LOL EMEA website, the organizer stated that the format is a “pilot program as LoL Esports considers broader changes to the competitive calendar and season structure in 2024.” It also reassured the public that, peradventure, if the format succeeds in its pilot phase among fans, teams, and players, it will expand its structure to accommodate more regions in the next variations.

The game developer and organizer stated that their plans on how the competitive structure would work would be revealed as the new season approaches. It also assures that change will offer an opportunity to unite fans across the EMEA region.

Rogue’s League of Legends team will be rebranded for the 2023 LEC Spring Split, but it is not certain whether the team will be known as KOI. Despite the move, Rogue’s current management will continue to be in charge of the operations and management structure of the primary League of Legends team.

There are not a lot of details known concerning the partnership; as such, the percentage split, as well as the purchase amount, are unconfirmed. Besides the rebranding, the partnership will also see the co-owner of KOI, Llanos, become the “featured ambassador” of both organizations as well as their respective teams.

Llanos commented on the recent partnership and revealed that it would speed up the growth of the company as well as provide more opportunities for them.

Reports concerning the merger between Rogue and KOI started making the rounds in August. At the time, it was mentioned that Rogue would retain their LEC spot and move the European Regional League lineup to LVP Superliga Spain from the Ultraliga. The official details concerning the move were not shared along with the merger announcement.
The merger will undoubtedly benefit both organizations, mainly due to Rogue’s expertise in building and discovering league talent and KOI’s branding. Both organizations have individually impressive fan bases, so operating under the same banner will vastly increase their popularity.

Rogue had their most successful League of Legends season this year and were awarded the champions of the LEC 2022 Summer Split. The North American team are currently among the number of teams participating in the League of Legends World Championships as Europe’s No 1 seed.

The MVP award is Nigsy’s first, but he was previously a part of two All-Pro teams, first in North America (Spring 2020) and then in Europe (Summer 2022). He is the third mid laner to be given the title since it started in 2014. Caps was the first, and then Vincent ‘Vetheo’ Berrié, the most recent winner in spring 2022.

Nisqy joined the MAD Lions in May this year and helped the team reach second place with a 12-6 record at the end of the regular season despite being unable to qualify for the spring playoffs. He was signed onto the team after being away from professional play for six months.

He previously played with Fnatic, and went on to part ways with the team after performing poorly in the 2021 League of Legends World Championship. In December of that year, Nisqy was moved to a substitute position in the squad but did not find a new team in time for the 2022 season.

In order to sign on the player, MAD Lions’ player Steven “Reeker” Che was moved to a LFL team, BDS Academy, earlier. Nisqy’s performance was undoubtedly integral to the team’s improvement this season.

The MAD Lions were previously unable to qualify for the playoffs for the 2022 LEC Spring Split and finished the tournament in seventh place. The team earned an 8-10 record, much different from when they won both splits in 2021.

Nisqy earned a 4.3 KDA in the regular season, and an impressive 75.2 percent kill participation. The player is expected to earn another MVP award in the playoffs. He was previously named as the preferred gamer to win the MVP award by past MVP winners like Caps and Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski.

MAD Lions began their summer split journey on August 26, with a game against Rogue. Despite being close favorites with moneyline odds of $1.88 and $1.97 for Rogue with the top betting sites, MAD Lions lost to Rogue. Due to the 2-3 defeat, the Spanish franchise made an early exit from the playoffs.

BDS have not performed well in their first year of participating in the LEC. They finished one spot above Astralis during the Spring, and are headed in the same direction this summer.

They lost their first three matches this summer to SK Gaming, Astralis, and Team Vitality. In week 2, they attempted a turnaround, winning G2 Esports after 35 minutes of action.

However, that represents their only victory so far, as they endured consecutive losses against Fnatic, Misfits Gaming, and Excel Esports.

Before the start of week 4, the team announced that they would be participating remotely due to the COVID-19 scare. BDS’ top laner, Tobiasz “Agresivoo” Ciba, tested positive for the virus, resulting in the team not returning to the LEC Studio in Berlin.

“During our most-recent internal routine COVID Test, Tobiasz “Agresivoo” Ciba has returned with a PCR test, we now sadly have to announce that we are competing remotely for this Week 4 of the LEC.”

The announcement revealed that the 23-year-old was showing mild symptoms. The Swedish esports organization also said that their players’ health and safety is a top priority.

“Tobi has only been showing very mild symptoms yet please join us in wishing him a swift recovery.

Agresivoo joined the team at the end of May, replacing Adam “Adam” Maanane, in what seemed to have been an exchange of spots. Adam was relegated to the academy team while Agresivoo was promoted. Nonetheless, his experience in the French regional league has not helped BDS win.

Participating remotely has not helped their cause, as they lost the first match of week 4. They squared off against MAD Lions and suffered one of their quickest defeats in this split.

MAD were the heavy favorites across several betting platforms with moneyline odds of $1.19, making their victory expected. BDS were pegged at $4.84.
